Last week I was in Cherokee, North Carolina with my wife on vacation. We were heading to Florida with a stop off in the Smokey Mountains.
Cherokee is an Indian reservation best known for the Harrah’s Indian casino, and tacky tourist shops.
At one of the continental breakfasts the hotels supply, CNN was on the TV and they were talking about President Bush in full attack mode. Everything they were saying was exactly opposite of what I knew to be true and I shook my head.
My wife asked what was wrong and I replied, “The left just does not get it. The more they attack and overplay their hand, the more the Red States turn away from them.”
As we got further into the discussion it occurred to me that other people in the room were listening in on my vocal history of how the left got to where they are today.
It also occurred to me that very few people seem to have a history of the ridiculous rise of the left and how they are dying today.
So here you are reading this to enlighten yourself on how the liberals have blown it.
But first, I have a theory that, after you talk about something that someone has never heard before, a common experience with me, you hear about it in print or on TV again within a few days. Never fails.
Sure enough a few days after being in Cherokee I got an email story from an aunt that described how the Cherokee Indians are putting the Ten Commandments up on display in the Tribal Council headquarters. The Tribe feels God has blessed them with the casino funds and they want to display the Commandments to thank God for their good fortune.
Knowing that the whiny left will attack them, the Tribe has the perfect answer, as reported in the
The Smokey Mountain News.
“ There is no First Amendment issue involved, and even if the American Civil Liberties Union wanted to make one, it can't. The U.S. Constitution does not apply to Cherokee, nor to any other Native American tribe for that matter, according to Cherokee's Attorney General David Nash.
"We are a sovereign nation and we can pretty much post anything we want in our council chambers," said Kephart. "For once the federal government is not going to tell us what to do. We can feel good about it because we are standing up for God. The more it becomes controversial, the more we need to stand firm."
If only the rest of the United States could tell the ACLU, a communist founded organization, where to go like the Cherokees have.
What a great country we would have.
Some of us are working on it. Just trying to push the liberals over the cliff they seem to want to head towards politically.
But In 1963, the year I was born, the Democrats were at the top of their game. Not the liberals, per se, but the Democrat party. With JFK in the White House they had control of the entire government. The House, the Senate and the Presidency.
The irony for me is that if JFK were alive today he would be a Republican.
With his tax cuts to spur the economy, his staunch anti-communist stance and his faith in the military, he would have no choice but to side with Republicans on most issues.
If he could get past his loony brother, Teddy.
But JFK also had his Vietnam. He escalated troops and set the stage for a long drawn out war. Having shown weakness after the Bay Of Pigs fiasco, where we tried to stage a coup of Castro in Cuba, Kennedy had to come out strong on the Vietnam War.
But many in his party hated it. The young radicals were starting to make their voices heard. First as harmless free-spirited beatniks, then as unwashed. unkept, pro-communist Anti-American radicals. This transition took a decade, but the same kids that were using rock-n-roll to shake up their parents were starting to use marches and protests to shake up their government.
I am not being too simplistic to say that the formation of the anti-war left by communist sympathizers and the TV media, at the time just the 3 networks, NBC, CBS, ABC, along with the major left wing newspapers, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The L.A. Times, led to the rise of the liberals in the 1960’s.
To be sure, the Civil Right movement helped attract well-meaning people of all beliefs. (In fact, the Civil Rights Act would never have passed without a MAJORITY of the signers being Republican). But the protests and the violence of the Civil Rights movement opened up a window for the radicals in the country to gain a foothold on the youth of America.
And the results were not good.
Suddenly it was cool to be Anti-American and Anti-war, even though the proof was already in that the “Domino Theory”, the belief that we had to stop the Soviet Union from expanding or the free world would fall one country at a time, was actually happening in Vietnam.
When we did leave Vietnam millions died there and in Cambodia at the hands of ruthless communistic governments, thanks to the liberals in this country who supported the anti-war movement.
The anti-war movement spread on the idea that the evil military was the problem, not the solution. A generation that fought back Nazism and fascism in World War II now saw their own kids attacking the very institutions and beliefs that made this country work.
How could a first cultural war not occur then?
The classic irony of the 1960’s is that the very people who protested in free speech rallies and anti-war marches now ban free speech in colleges and in daily life.
With a military draft on, the loony left started enrolling in college to avoid going to war.
Then they entered graduate school to stay out of the war longer.
Then they started, God forbid, teaching on the campuses.
Then they started running the colleges.
Then they started changing and ruining the universities with speech codes, Politically Correct rules and thought police punishment.
But now they own academia, the courts and little else.
But in 1970 they had to take on Nixon.
“Tricky Dick”, as he was known to our friends on the left, was hated ever since he had outed true Communists in the 1950’s.
In particular, Alger Hiss, the American United Nations Secretary General who spied for the Soviet Union.
Hiss became a symbol for the left. The American left wing supported the Soviet Union and had done so from the start. The true left loved the idea of Socialism and saw it happening with FDR, and then with “The War On Poverty” under Lyndon Johnson.
(Interesting how the left always says how we “lost” Vietnam, but they never say we “lost” the War On Poverty. This with the fact that you could buy all the Fortune 500 companies three times over with the amount of money we have spent on this “war”. )
But Johnson’s mistake in the 1960’s had been to escalate the Vietnam War. Getting blasted from the loony left in his party he decided not to run again and that led to Nixon winning in 1968 on a promise to end the war.
History throws curves at us once in awhile and this is one of them.
Nixon gives us two of the favorite liberal government programs---
the horrible EPA:The Environmental Protection Agency, and the corrupt, useless and outrageously politically correct Department Of Education, and yet he is hated by the left to this day.
Johnson gives us an expanded war in Vietnam and the failed War On Poverty and he is beloved by the left.
Go figure.
1970’sIn the early 1970’s the left was happy to finally have “Earth Day”, the beginning of the end of common sense about the environment in the United States.
The first Earth Day celebrations were feel-good hold hands and sing Kumbya- type events.
The first one was harmless and rightly pointed out how polluted the air and water was. Now, 30 years later with the air cleaner than it has ever been and environmental laws strangling us all, they are meaningless, except to the left wing environmental whackos.
But what Earth Day did in the 1970’s was to bring together liberal groups of all stripes to meet and plan the next thing to protest. This was the beginning of the organized “nut parade”.
Gays protested for gay “rights” and gay “pride”.
Radical feminists met to demand the passage of the incredibly dumb Equal Rights Amendment and Comparable Worth. This was the nutty theory that the Federal government can decide that a female employee in any job should make what any a male makes in any job. This could mean that a female secretary would get paid what a male airline pilot does.
Blacks marched to protest any number of things, from affirmative action to more food stamps to better public paid housing.
Environmentalists marched for cleaner air and water, and the end of “Big Oil”
Remember now, the only news people got was from the left wing media, so it was easy to get rid of Nixon after he handed them his head with Watergate.
With Nixon gone and the Clinton-Lite of Jimmy Carter in the White House, the left was set loose upon the countryside like some horrible disease.
With the big three networks, and the left wing press to promote the latest cause, the left started demanding that the minority have the right to tell the majority what to do.
The majority, mainly what today we know as the “Red States”, were asleep and missing what was going on. If they DID know, they seldom believed it was what it was—
A left wing liberal takeover of all the institutions in the country.The colleges fell fast, then came the entire federal government after Nixon.
The media was easy since they already believed in the liberal outlook, then the attack moved to businesses.
The left made it a crime to make too much profit. They pushed for “windfall profit” taxes on the oil companies. A move that pushed the price of oil up even further and constricted supply.
But don’t try and tell Jimmy Carter or the liberals this was wrong.
They ALWAYS ignore what has caused their downfall.
The Law Of Unintended Consequences.For those of us who believe in this “law”, it simply means that for every law or action taken by the government there is a worse unintended result.
If you pass a law saying all landowners must keep their forests untouched if a spotted owl lands in it, the landowner will clear cut the trees to avoid the unlawful taking of his property by the Endangered Species Act.
If you raise taxes, people work less and invest less to avoid their money going to the government.
Roe Vs. Wade becomes the norm and abortions are legal. The left gets so tied into it as an obsession that they object to ANY parental notification when a 13 year old wants an abortion.
They even support Partial Birth Abortion, where scissors are used to scramble the brains of a newborn. (Did you know that if ANY part of a babies’ head is still in the vagina, then it is not considered a baby? If you kill the child with the head still inside the mother it is Partial Birth Abortion. If you pull the head all the way out then it is Infanticide.
On abortion the Law Of Unintended Consequences is the fact that the left ignores the fact that Democrats abort many more babies than Republicans, so they are killing their own future voters.
The left ignores this because they are always doing the “right thing”, or “helping the minorities”, or “doing what we FEEL is right”.
The liberals FEEL about issues but ignore the consequences, Conservatives THINK about issues, and the consequences.
In the 1970’s Jimmy Carter started pushing through bad law after bad law, dumb economic policies abounded, incompetent people were running the government and Congress was spending like a drunken sailor. Inflation was rampant and interest rates went to 21%.
Jimmy Carter blamed us.
In a televised speech he says we are all guilty of promoting a “malaise” in the country.
He creates the “Misery Index” to tell us how bad things are economically.
He raises taxes to solve the problems, which only makes it worse.
Then the Iranian Hostage crisis haunts the left and the Carter administration for over a year. When they finally decide to use the military they have decimated by budget cuts, the rescue mission fails when a helicopter crashes in the desert.
When the Soviet Union invades Afghanistan, Carter’s answer is to boycott the Summer Olympics in Moscow. The Soviets must have fallen over laughing. They had gotten what they wanted. The left in control of the power in the U.S. .
The Peaceniks had won!
So had the Communists.
But the left is happy. They control everything and all the hapless Republicans can do about it is talk about an actor who wants to be President.
1980’s
I was in high school when Ronald Reagan ran for president.
What did I know? I was just happy he wanted to keep the Space Shuttle program going after Carter threatened to kill it.
Then when I entered college I started seeing something wrong with the way my professors were talking about Reagan. To listen to them he was the end of the world.
We should leave the Soviet Union alone.
We should stop supporting the anti-communist fighters in Latin America.
Oh, and by the way, you don’t deserve a tax cut.
I had one professor who chastised me for writing about the Shuttle program, telling me that the Space Shuttle destroys the ozone layer. When I asked for proof he angrily told me it was a known fact.
This was the first of many times I would realize the left has no proof, just feelings and hopes.
When my freshman year English professor assigned us a book on how great the Soviet- backed freedom fighters were, I balked at the premise that we should allow the whole area to fall to the Soviets since they “cared about the people more than the West did”.
The professor yelled at me in front of the class that I was an uncaring and foolish person for believing the Soviet Union was the problem, and not the United States.
I started to realize I was a Republican and the only sane person at Temple University.
Reagan became a hero to the right, and the enemy of the liberals because he went right after their sacred cows.
Affirmative Action---Stop trying to solve discrimination by discriminating.
Tax Cuts--- Give people back their money to spend and spur the economy. (It works every time, unless you spend more than the tax cuts generate which is what the Democrat controlled Congress did under Reagan).
Build Up The Military---After the disgraceful military cuts under Carter, Reagan strengthened the military and took the fight to the Soviets in Latin America, Europe and Afghanistan. Supplying Stinger missiles to the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan so they could take out the Soviet helicopter gun ships led to the Soviet pullout.
Reform and Cut useless Government programs----the left hated this theory. There is no bad program according to them.
The left was still in control of Congress though, and they used this power to derail Reagan at any chance. They felt that his election was just a fluke. After all, he was a dumb cowboy. (Sound familiar?)
When Reagan won a landslide in 1984 after Democrat Walter Mondale told the American people he would raise their taxes, the left went nuts.
They also got angrier and angrier.
How had this happened? How had this buffoon won another election?
The “Teflon President” had beaten the left in the election, but they were determined to get him any way they could.
They went after Robert Bork, whom Reagan nominated as Supreme Court Justice.
They attacked Bork’s beard, movie rental history (Obtained illegally by the Democrats), and his thinking on every issue and his personality.
The hatred and evilness of the American Left was on full display on National TV.
Couple this with the Oliver North Hearings, where North blasted the Democrats for failing to see why it was important to keep the Soviets out of Latin America, and you had the beginnings of the Red States seeing the left for who they really were:
Un-American radicals.
I was working in Hollywood at the time and the left was in full force and anger. I was often the only Conservative on a set and if the subject of politics ever came up I was the only one defending Reagan. I even lost jobs because I was a Republican, being called a Nazi as I left the interview.

To the left, there is no other side but theirs.
So Reagan can’t be President and his polices can’t be real.
Their anger is building as they sense their world slipping away.
1990’s
The Law Of Unintended Consequences played out against the Republicans though when George Bush Sr. became President in 1988. The left got much of what it wanted under Bush Sr.
Bush Sr. got browbeaten at an Andrews Air force base meeting into raising taxes, thereby giving the left the ammunition to win in 1992.
His “No New taxes” pledge became null and void.
Bush also signed into law The American With Disabilities Act, a horribly written law that left it up to LAWYERS to decide what the law said. The trial lawyers pushed hard for this along with the trade unions, since under the law all places of business had to have new bathrooms installed to meet the guidelines.
The ADA law never defined disability and within 10 years we went from 25 known disabilities to over 150, including “chronic lateness”.
Businesses with over 25 people laid off thousands so they would not fall under the law and the economy faltered.
Bush Sr. signed the new Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act.
These two laws saddled businesses with massive costs, took away private property rights and, again, left it to the lawyers to decide what the law said.
The left had gotten from Bush what they could never have gotten under Reagan-
More power.
The right punishes Bush Sr., in 1992 by staying home on Election Day, so the country gets stuck with Bill Clinton.
I was in Grad school fighting the left on a Villanova University talk radio show when Clinton was running for President.
I once had on a guest from a Conservative group who said that the PC movement was ruining Villanova University. He stated facts figures, names, and proof of what he was saying. He made a clear case that the PC movement was dangerous for America.
The next day I got called into a meeting with the radio station and an outfit on campus called “Peace And Justice”.
More like Liberalism and Injustice to me.
This group, run by a Catholic Nun, proceeded to attack me for pointing out the truth about what was happening in the classrooms on campus. They wanted me taken off the air but I threatened a fight if they tried that. After an ugly period of left wing insults I agreed to a disclaimer on every show that took the University off the hook for what I, or my guests, said on the air.
I made a promise to myself this was the last time I ever capitulated to the left.
Ultimately they attacked me for the rest of the year and tried to get me off the air even after the agreement. I just used it all as material for my show and this angered them more.
I once pointed out that the whole “multicultural” movement was dangerous for the country since it took away the American tradition of rugged individualism, as well as the melting pot.
What you have to know is that the left wants the melting pot without the heat.
The left wants people to be fractured in groups and minorities to help undermine the traditions and beliefs that made this country great. They do not want immigrants to have to become Americans. They want illegal aliens and immigrants to change America into a liberal utopia of multiculturism and balkanized peoples that do whatever they want, whenever they want.
The liberals want no right and wrong, or any moral judgments.When a liberal professor gave me a “c” on the final paper for explaining why FDR was a socialist, I again had to fight the University all the way to the top. I was told to rewrite the paper but refused. I had it peer reviewed and was granted a “b”.
The professor protested but the department head signed off on it, seeing that a “c” would have been a failing grade in graduate school.
But the department head also told me not to apply for a doctorate anywhere because I was “too Conservative to be a professor”. He even put this in writing in his reference letters to the colleges I had already applied to.
On top of all this I had a President who was a draft dodger, womanizer and a liberal.
The Clinton years were hard on those of us on the Right.
What we did not know is that this was the beginning of the end for the liberal control of this country.
In 1994 when Newt Gingrich and the Republicans swept control of Congress from the left they were shell-shocked.
I had predicted this a year earlier and was called a crackpot by many friends and family members. But now that it happened we had the left on the ropes.
Peter Jennings accused the American voters of having a “temper tantrum”.
Dan Rather went ballistic over the results and how it could have happened.
Tom Brokaw derailed the results as the fault of “angry white males”.
CNN practically had a funeral show the next morning when Alabama Senator Richard Shelby switched parties to the Republicans.
Time and Newsweek both used cover photos to make Gingrich look like The Grinch and the stories inside accused Republicans of wanting to starve children and old people.
But the Red states had spoken.
The left was in shock, but they still had their President.
And Monica.
When the Lewinski story broke CNN actually has on a liberal guest who thought she was a Republican plant in the Democrat White House. He said the Republicans had set this up.
See. The liberals can never understand how they get caught lying, lose elections and battles. It is ALWAYS someone’s fault but their own.
To the left you stupid hicks in the south elected the first Republican House in 40 years.
You evil Republicans put Monica in front of poor Bill to tease him into Oval Office sex.
And by the way, Newt Gingrich is the Devil.
We, on the Left, however, are righteous and good.
But the left had been blindsided by the “New Media”--The Internet and the Foxnews Network.
Newsweek had the Lewinski story for weeks but refused to break it.
It took Matt Drudge on the Internet to do so.
MSNBC started out slow on the story but had to pick up the pace as Foxnews went full speed ahead with it.
All this threw Clinton and the left for a loop.
Clinton was forced to sign Welfare Reform over objections of the left.
Clinton started bombing Iraq and Afghanistan during the Impeachment to look tough.
(Where were the anti-war protesters then? I guess it was OK for Clinton to kill night janitors and aspirin factory workers in the name of HIS war.)
Clinton was demoralized and inept and the left started panicking.
But they had Al Gore fort the next election!
All the hapless Republicans had was a Texas governor who was a dumb cowboy.
2000One of the keys to the downfall of the left has been how slow they are to realize they do not control the message any longer. They still think CNN, the three networks and the liberal press media can convince the Red States they are great people.
The liberals discount Foxnews, blogs like this one and talk radio as rantings by the extreme right. They are doing so at their peril.
Nothing shows this better than the two elections of George W. Bush.
The left thought they had a lock on the election of 2000 with Al Gore.
Gore cared about people, was an extreme environmentalist, had invented the Internet and looked great in earth tones.
Bush was a hick southern stupid cowboy who couldn’t speak.
And he’s a religious nut!
Saying that Jesus was his greatest person to admire in a political debate!
He’s a goner.
But the left fits the mold of the media on religion and on Christians in particular.
Only 4 % of the American public are atheists or agnostics, but 24% of the media say they are atheists or agnostic.
(Personally I don’t believe in atheists, and I’m not sure about agnostics.)
The whole election fiasco of 2000 comes down to this:
The left thought they could use the courts they own to steal an election, counting on the stupidity of the American electorate who does not understand the Electoral College.
The Right though now had the New Media, the conservative groups who organized to prevent fraud in the recounts, (who at one point marched into the counting room to stop the process), and the benefit of the Reagan and Bush Sr. Supreme Court picks, in spite of David Souter.
The liberals also had no clue about the Red State/Blue State split.
Having traveled the south extensively during the 1990’s for NASCAR races and vacations I knew that the left was in trouble in the south.
Even Louisiana, the once Democrat controlled machine state, was falling by the late 1990’s.
But the left never saw it coming.
I have a t-shirt from the 2000 election showing the Red State/Blue State election map.
There is nothing better than watching the face of a liberal when they see the map.
They go nuts.
They cannot understand how the blue areas are almost non-existent in the South and Southwest except for the college towns. This is where the left lost it.
Thirty-plus years of harassing and abusing the parts of the country outside the elite cities of New York, L.A., San Fran and Boston led to their downfall.
All the Latte towns in New England don’t have enough votes to counter the votes in Alabama alone.
I deal with people in the Washington D.C. area all the time who never have gotten out of the East Coast. When I tell them to drive 40 miles west of I-81 and down south to see the country they ask, “Why would I want to do that”?
Because that’s where the votes are you fool.
President Bush is the Nascar President, but he is also the one who is turning the screws into the left.
Win or lose, the Social Security reform fight has pulled the rug out from under the left on one of their prized programs. They have had to admit it is going broke.
The war on terror has pointed out how weak the left is on defense and how Clinton ignoring the threat from terrorism in the 1990’s led to 9/11.
Red State people don’t forget this, but the Blue State liberal left does.
They march in Washington with the loon Cindy Sheehan with signs saying “Make Levees Not War.” (I guess they forgot that Democrats control New Orleans and misspent the money Bush sent for the new levees).
The Bush tax cuts have brought in massive amounts of funds to the government and spurred the economy.
“Tax Cuts For The Rich” no longer works for the left as a battle cry.
Gun Control is off the table as more and more states pass Right To Carry laws.
Even the new Supreme Court Nominee Harriet Meirs owns a gun.
The Supreme Court will be back in sane hands after Bush gets his three justices on. (Look for another vacancy within a year.)
Every time the left wing groups cry out they look dumber and dumber.
Blaming President Bush for Hurricane Katrina, poverty, homeless people, the Islamofacist attacks around the world and the levees breaking in New Orleans just does not sell in the world of the New Media where we can fight back and point out the lies.
Just ask Dan Rather.
People are tired of the same old PC crap and there is a huge backlash coming.
They may say one thing in public and to pollsters, but they do another when they pull the voting handle.
The left has Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid as the face of the liberal party.
It’s enough to make you almost feel sorry for them.
I said almost.
We need to turn the screws harder and push them over the edge they are on.
In Matworld we destroy the left like they tried to destroy us all those years with lies in the media and in Congress.
We take back all the courts, the universities and the schools and return sanity to the country.
We cut taxes even further to starve the government and we use the Hurricanes and the aftermath to start offshore drilling anywhere there is oil as we build more refineries.
We escalate the War On Terror by racially profiling all middle eastern men at all places, as allowed by the laws passed in World War II, and we monitor all mosques like they do in England.
We also refuse to spend any more tax dollars on whacko groups or causes. Let the left find their own source of funds.
The liberal left is this close to losing power for a generation, and now is the time to push them over the edge into political hell.
